In the United Kingdom, camping is on the up. 4.24 million camping trips took place in 2015, bringing in more than £664 million to the local economy. And it’s easy to see why. Camping is cheaper and more environmentally friendly than holidaying abroad, and it allows you to get closer to nature and explore parts of the country you didn’t know existed.
However, if you’re looking for a camping trip with a difference this year, then you should wave goodbye to the comfortable and convenient campsite and instead consider camping on the beach……
1. The fresh sea air
Ever wondered why you slept so well after spending a few hours on the beach? It’s thanks to the sea air, which is charged with negative ions that help us to absorb oxygen. These ions also balance our levels of serotonin, which is linked to stress, so there’s really no better place to spend a night if you’re looking to unwind and relax after a busy week at work.
2. You can build sandcastles
Camping with children? The sand will keep them entertained throughout the afternoon and into the evening. Remember to pack a bucket and spade, and think about hosting your own sandcastle building competition to get the whole family involved. Prizes for the winner!
3. Food is readily available
Depending on where you go camping, you may find that your evening’s meal is ready and waiting for you to arrive. Buy a cheap fishing rod and catch some fresh fish, or use a small net and catch prawns and crabs from under the rocks. You can then cook your fresh fish on a camping stove, on a campfire, on a barbeque or in a pan of boiling water. Delicious!
4. It’s free!
You don’t need to spend hundreds of pounds on a hotel room and transport when you can sleep at the beach for free. All you need is a tent (check out the best beach tent here), some sleeping bags and something to eat, and you’re good to go. However, you should remember that some beaches will have restrictions and you may not legally be allowed to sleep there, so check with the authorities or tourist board before you lay down your head for the night.
5. It’s quiet
Perhaps the best thing about camping on the beach is the peace and tranquillity. Bring your favourite book and some snacks and soak up the sun, safe in the knowledge that you won’t be disturbed by screaming children or television sets.
6. The waves will wake you up
Forget your alarm clock or barking dog – just let the calming sound of the waves wake you up from a night of slumber. Just remember to set up camp above the high tide line, and you’ll not need to worry about an unwanted morning shower!
7. It’s something different
The chances are that you have never spent a night on the beach before, and camping is one of the best – and most comfortable – ways of doing exactly that. You’ll be able to get closer to nature and do something you’ve always wanted to do, all while staying warm and cosy.
Whether it’s your first camping trip or you’re a seasoned camper, have fun!
